Light It Up Blue for World Autism Awareness Day.

For the past six years, Autism Speaks has spread the word by sharing information globally on April 2nd. According to the CDC, nearly one in 88 children has been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. Children usually begin to show symptoms sometime between their first and third birthday, but typically aren’t diagnosed until they’re four years old. Often times not reaching age appropriate developmental milestones are the first indicator. Check out this information about autism and spread the word.

FACTS AND STATS

  • What is Autism?  Developmental delays; Difficulty in social interaction and communication; Restrictive and repetitive behaviors.
  • Global Prevalence: On average 1 in 160 children have some degree of autism.
  • Affected by Autism:  About 67 million people worldwide.
  • Causes?  Genetic and other factors that influence early brain development.

5 WAYS TO SUPPORT LOVED ONES

1.  Use community health and educational services to help create personalized treatment plans.

2.  Be an informed advocate by staying current on autism research.

3.  Foster an inclusive environment inside and outside of the home by asking neighbors, family and teachers for support.

4.  Document progress to track what is working and what is not.

5.  Teach skills to foster self-advocacy and independence.


TREATMENT

  • Auditory training
  • Behavior therapy
  • Sensory Integration
  • Facilitated communication
  • Speech therapy
  • Physical therapy
  • Occupational therapy
